Have you checked with your router it should give you a list of devices
connected to it. On the iPhone if you touch the arrow on the right of
the network it should show you detail of the network connection this
should be set to DHCP and if connected successfully will show the IP
address assigned to the phone together with subnet mask, router IP
address and DNS server. The last two should be the same as your router
if router is not set to your router it does not know where to send any
network request and if DNS is different it might not be able to resolve
IP addresses from DNS names you might use like www.bbc.co.uk. Hope this
helps.

Airplane mode is actually the way to go here, since it saves power by
during off the cellular radio.

Wifi does work in Airplane mode if enabled.

Is your Wi-Fi connection active. In other words can this same Wi-Fi
connection be used successfully on your laptop?

I have seen instances were I can connect to a Wi-Fi connection
according to the iphone but since the Wi-Fi connection isn't
functioning properly I will get some sort of no connection message.

My bad. Obviously, you're right. : )

And what do you see when you tap the little blue arrow icon to the right
of those? What is the IP Address, for instance?

It may be that your router is set up to do MAC address filtering and
does not allow the Wi-Fi address of your iPhone to connect.

Has this phone *ever* connected to this wireless router?

Do any other computers or devices currently connect to this wireless
router successfully?

A rough guess is that you have a DHCP problem. Any chance you can check
your DHCP server, or try hardcoding an appropriate IP into the iPhone
and see if that helps?

The other thought that comes to mind would be if your access point is
set to 802.11n-only, this might cause the same symptoms.

>And won't the repeated searching for a provider drain the battery?

Yes. First enable Airplane mode (which disables all radios) then enable
Wifi.

Try rebooting the router.

If no joy, go into iPhone Settings/WiFi, click the right-hand arrow for your
network and then 'Forget this network'.
Reboot and try reconnecting.

If no joy, forget the network again, reboot and then enter the network SSID
and password manually.

If no joy, try someone else's network.

If no joy, try restoring the phone.

If no joy, try restoring the firmware.

In fairness, Airplane mode does switch off Wifi. (However, you can
switch it back on while keeping the cellular radios off)

Unfortunately I believe you still lose GPS based location services this
way, although you're still squarely in iPod Touch territory here anyway.

No GPS radio location in Airplane mode. Airplane mode turns off all
radios. Airplane mode is to comply with Airline regulations. That is
why it exists. Some airlines have Wi-Fi. Thus the option to turn Wi-Fi
back on in Airplane mode.

Don't know why -- but today it is working. I did nothing differently.
Put the phone down the other day after trying over and over. Picked it up
tonight... tapped Safari and boom... there we are.

Don't know what was going on -- but glad to know I can now use it as an
iTouch (basically as in inside XM server -- through my iHome.) Now I
don't need to buy a separate radio!

Thanks everyone for your help.
