Troubleshooting
I had a strange problem yesterday. In trying to help someone with a
problem, I unchecked "Sync with this iPhone over Wi-Fi" in iTunes. I then
unmounted the iPhone in the left column.
After that, I couldn't get iTunes to recognize the iPhone, even when
connected via USB. I then noticed that the phone was not charging when
connected. I tried taking the Dock out of the circuit and plugging the
phone in directly; that didn't help. Changing cables didn't help, nor did
using a different port on the USB hub. Using the charger plugged into a
wall socket worked so far as charging the phone, but I still was unable to
get it to sync because it was unmounted and the iPhone could not connect
with iTunes over USB.
The upshot is that the USB hub is a powered hub, and one of the cats
managed to knock its power brick out of the socket of the surge protector.
Once I plugged it back in, everything worked. The hub is located where I
can access its ports, but the lights are not visible; otherwise, I probably
would have noticed that its lights were out, and would have solved the
problem much sooner.
