Default Transparent Aluminium

Was watching a documentary from 1984 on how to save the humpacked whales
with william shatner and leonard nimoy in it. Scotty showed some manager
at Plexicorp in San Francisco how to make transparent aluminium.

When you look at the type of glass used for the iphone4, it contains a
large amount of aluminium. It is in fact, tranparent aluminium.

Having taken my phone apart, it is quite interesting how that glass
feels/weights. It is truly very light and feels nothing like glass. And
it is very strong. (the brand/trade name for this type of glass is:
Gorilla glass)

So slowly but surely, Star Trek technology is slowy becoming real, one
by one.

Not even close.

Are you sure that was a documentary and not the Star Trek SF movie?

No and no. While Corning's Gorilla Glass contains trace amounts of
aluminum and other elements, no matter what chemical additives it may
contain, it is most certainly glass, and not transparent aluminum. Some
telescope mirrors are made by depositing aluminum on glass. It is
highly reflective and not at all transparent or even translucent.

Can you think of a single bit of Star Trek fictional technology that
has been realized? I can't. Quantum physicists have transported quantum
particles, but they didn't get the idea from Scottie, and they won't be
transporting people soon (read: never).

We have no transporter, no warp drive/FTL travel*, no replicator, no
dilithium crystals, no phasers, no practical particle beam weapons
(require too much electrical power). The communicator was neat in the
1960's, but it is not the father or the smartphone and it can't compare
to one in capabilities. Humans have never been to another planet and
will almost certainly never visit another star system or encounter an
alien intelligence in person. Get over it, SF fans!

*You recall from your own quantum physics classes that there is
insufficient energy in the Universe to accelerate an atom, much less a
starship, to c, and certainly not to "warp" speeds!

The iPhone uses glass, a special toughened glass, but still just glass.
(Glass is actually a liquid, so if you leave your iPhone standing in the
same position "long enough" the top will become thinner than the bottom as
the glass flows downwards.)

Real transparent aluminum (or more correctly aluminium) has already been
created. It was done "way back" in 2009. One of the planned uses was for
bigger windows on space stations. Among many other links:
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases...0727130814.htm

Plus the iPad is of course Apple's version of the Star Trek PADD.

Now if only Apple would make a the iPhone 5 a flip-top model. ;-)
(There already was a Star Trek mobile phone made by another company, but
unfortunately it wasn't that good or "Star Trek" enough for the fans.)

Probably you are joking, but just in case: No, glass isn't actually a
liquid, and it doesn't flow at any measurable rate.

Yes, I know often windows in older houses have panes that are thicker
at the bottom (they were installed that way). If glass really
"flowed" like that, then 1000 year old cathedral windows would have
openings at the top.

Here is more information if you like:

Second link says (as if the name didn't give it away)
composed of aluminum and ...

First says Gorilla Glass is an aluminosilicate.

Not only that, but if you believe the "Star Fleet Technical Manual"
which says the warp factor N is effectively N²C then you must also
believe that earth to alpha centauri is a forty-day journey, and
the next closest star is over a year away.

(Unless you go to the speeds that make Scotty apoplectic,
then the second trip is still over a year.)
