Default Synching direction and other settings with iPhone 4 S and iTunes?

Hi!

In old Palm's HotSync with Treo 680, Vx, etc. with computers (Windows
[XP, 2000, and 98 SE) and Mac OS X 10.5.8), one could control how to
synchronize like PDA/Smartphone's datas overwrite computer's datas. Is
this possible to do the same with the latest/newest iTunes and Mac OS X
10.5.8?

Thank you in advance.

Judging from the Windows iTunes the answer is 'No'.

Nevertheless, you can always instruct iTunes to one-time have the PC/Mac
data overwrite the data on the iPhone. This feature is available for
contacts, calendar, e-mail accounts, bookmarks and notes. However, I
fear that you will only be able to set these flags after you connected
your iPhone with the PC - and then (usually) the synchronization
automatically starts. So you might have to stop this before it gets to
the real synchronization...

Best of luck,

Michael

To some extent: iTunes has options to force sync some types of data from
the computer to the device, overwriting what is currently on the device.
There is no mechanism to force the data on the device to overwrite that
on the computer.

In iTunes, select the device in the left column, then click on the Info
tab and scroll down to the Advanced heading at the bottom. "Replace
information on this iPhone" (or iPod/iPad) options are available for
Contacts, Calendars, Mail Accounts, Bookmarks and Notes, provided the
item in question is being synchronized by iTunes.

Yeah, I wonder why you can't configure the device without connecting.
That's annoying.

Thanks. I will look at that. Is there a way to do this without
connecting the device?

No. It is an iTunes device-specific setting which you can only access
while the device is connected.

If you want to ensure that the data on the device is not automatically
synchronized BEFORE you get a chance to check this box, then there is a
setting for that:

iTunes > Preferences > Devices > Prevent iPods, iPhones and iPads from
syncing automatically.

Turn on that option and click OK before plugging in the device, then you
can set the "Replace information" setting and do the sync manually by
clicking on the Sync button.
