Default Succesfull surgery on my iPhone 4 !!

would like to report a succesfull surgery performed today.

General anesthesia was used (iPhone turned off). It was necessary
because after opening up the patient, the heart (battery) had to be
disconnected and removed to provide access to the faulty organ (the dock
connector assembly).

Transplant of the dock connector was tricky because I had to remove a
rubber microphone conduit from the old unit and put it on the new one.
But the new one had a plastic tab that was 1 or 2 mm too long and the
microphone "finger" wouldn't fit inside the rubber "thing". Cutting that
extra plastic film was tricky because it was so small even my swiss army
kife scissors were too big. But eventually managed it and fitted the
microphone rubber thing over the tiny microphone. (the rubber thing
"docks" with the side of the phone where there is a hole for sounds to
come in and then funnel those sounds right to the very small elecronic
part that contains a tiny hole (microphone).

My big fat fingers were HUGE compared to the pieces I was working on.
I've gained a lot of respect for the billions of chinese workers who do
this all day long, using their hands to handle tiny screws that are
smaller than a cookie crumbs.

It feels strange to once again have a working home button. Still not
quite used to the idea that it really works. I had sort of gotten used
to it being usable only a a phone. To use other apps, I had to turn it
off, turn it back on (giving me the main screen , and choose an app.

(n the previous surgery, I had replaced the home button and that
required COMPLETE disassembly to remove the front glass, but it tured
out that the connector between the home button and the dock assembly was
also rusted from sweat.)

(parts obtained from ifixit.com , of course :-)

You should probably stop sweating all over your phone. Yuck. ; )

I am a cyclist. Put phone in my jersey's back pocket. Normally, it is
dry, but there are situations where it gets wet/humid. My guess is that
it doesn't actually get in through the home button but via the dock.

I am thinking of perhaps taping over the dock connector when on the bike.

I also worry about humidity in exactly this situation. Depending on
the weather and ride length I either:

1) put the phone in my pocket with the back against my back.

2) pop it into a zip-lock back before putting it in my pocket!

When I go hiking I put my iPhone in a plastic zip lock bag.

It stays dry - and I can still operate it if need be.

I'm pretty sure I've seen water-proof cases advertised (Otterbox?) or
perhaps an armband (although I don't know if they make one for the iPhone
4 shape).

For my needs (low bulk, weight) when hiking, the ziplock bag is fine on
the odd weekend I'm out.

But if my son gets another iPhone I'll recommend the Otterbox Defender
to him. He's wrecked 2 iPhones to date. (One smashed and one drowned).

Dahon make a cycle mount and other accessories to allow you to use a hub
dynamo to keep the phone charged. Search for Biologic iPhone mount.
