Default Siri: 200 million because Apple was so late

Good news! It only cost Apple $200 million to catch up with Google's
Voice action and V lingo.

"Today Apple announced the iPhone 4S which disappointed many who were
expecting to see the iPhone 5. However, Apple was still able to excite
the fanbase with the public demo Siri, a virtual personal assistant
coming to iOS5 on October 12th. Apple acquired the company Siri for $200
million in April of last year and Steve Jobs described it as “artificial
intelligence”, not search or speech recognition.

Apple sums up the new service on their site. “Siri on iPhone 4S lets you
use your voice to send messages, schedule meetings, place phone calls,
and more. Ask Siri to do things just by talking the way you talk. Siri
understands what you say, knows what you mean, and even talks back. Siri
is so easy to use and does so much, you’ll keep finding more and more
ways to use it.”

Android already has similar virtual assistant apps like Vlingo, but they
are not as deeply integrated into the operating system as closely as
Siri. Check out the demo video below for an idea of what to expect.

If you were hoping that Google would launch their own virtual assistant
into the next version Android, then you might get your wish as soon as
next week. I recently received a random tip that Google has been working
on taking their Voice Search app to the next level with similar virtual
assistant features. Unfortunately I don’t have any specific details, but
we know that Google has been a leader in voice technology and facial
recognition is coming to Ice Cream Sandwich.

What I think Google might have in store is some kind of animated
character or pet that is tied to your Google account and appears on your
Android unlock screen. This might sound kind of crazy, but picture
something like Talking Tom Cat 2 (or Seaman for the Sega Dreamcast!),
but with real intelligence behind it that learns and remembers
everything you do."

Conclusion? If the phone is a disappointment, add some gadget.

I doubt that the implementation and integration of functions with Siri
is anywhere matched by Voice and V.

From what I've read about the demo, Siri needs a slow, deliberate voice
input. Could be irritating.

I'll stick to my iPhone 4 - likely for the next 4 years, at least. I
hardly use the voice recognition in it to dial. Only works with some
names and fails miserably when I'm driving (noise).

What is true remains true despite doubts and beliefs. Burroughs, CDC, DEC,
Sperry-Rand, SGI, and others did elegant designs in their day, before making a
fatal mistake. Then the talent migrated and a new company rose up. Perhaps Apple
will succeed, perhaps not. Someone will always being making the next best thing.

Perhaps if you'd been using a Mac it wouldn't have happened...

I believe it would depend on what I had said about the Mac. As an
educated observer like you has certainly noticed, for a message to get
through, I had to change my name and email address. Again. It seems the
problem wasn't on my computer at all.

Then people wonder why I'm a nym shifter...

I really don't see how that paragraph relates to the one from me that
you cited. But to be clear, what I meant wasn't it isn't the voice
recognition that counts, but how you interpret the context of the voice
message and integrate it into the various apps on the phone in a well
thought out manner.

Jobs has (from what we read) done a lot over the last 5 or more years to
groom the best talent in the company to understand Jobs think. That
doesn't mean they've mind melded, but they have a very sharp
understanding of what he was aiming at. They can always ask "what would
Steve do?" and possibly come up with a pretty good answer.

Will the Jobs influence last 5 years? Probably.

Will it last 10 years? Maybe.

Will Apple be around in 20 years? Almost certain.

Will Apple fan bois be Apple fan bois? Always.
