Maybe that means an electric car can finally get past the end of your

Impressive. And it only took them 16 months to surpass the Retina display!
Apple better watch out, the others are gaining on them.

I don't think Apple invented the Retina display. They could esilyt switch
display providers and use Toshibas new one ... the problem is that all the
software would then have to be redone for the new resolution, which is why
many companies, including Apple, are moving towards resolution-independant
methods for graphical objects like icons.

Besides which, there's a limit to what the average human eye can see, so
it would be completely pointless going to a 1billion PPI display on a
mobile phone.

The first "retina" display (300+ ppi) on a phone predates the iPhone 4,
and belonged to the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1, whose 800x480 display packed
into a 3" diagonal screen clocked in at 311 ppi in early 2009.

Of course Sony wasn't smart enough to give it a catchy name.

6.1 inches? That's one hell of a big phone.
