Default OT: Bloomberg rumour about ipad3

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-0...ster-chip.html

Basically, Apple expected to havd ipad3 on sale starting in March.

Apparantly production is already ramping up.

Apple has sold 40 million ipoads worth $25 billion in sales. This is now
the second largest revenue producer for Apple after the iPhone.

Foxconn gets 22% of its sales from Apple.

-Quad core chip

-enhancement that lets people jump more quickly between applications

-LTE support

-"more pixels on its screen than some high definition TVs (implies
"retina display ?)

It is noted in that article that LTE is possible because of bigger
battery to paliate the higher power requirements of LTE chips. The
implication is that Apple will wait for next generation of chips for an
update to iPhone.

Yup. But now they both face "viable" competion from Android devices.
Yes, they will hold the market share lead, but Android will run over
iOS some time in '13. Unless someone decides to pwan Android badly
enough.

You sure? They build a lot of stuff for Dell and HP. High dollar
stuff like data servers.

Not so much battery as real estate. Many of the current LTE chips are
"monsters" (note fingers in the air). OTOH, there are lots of other
phones with LTE.

Hardly. Recent sales figures:

Month iOS Android RIM
Oct 11 25.1% 61.6% 7.7%
Nov 11 38.8% 48.7% 6.4%
Dec 11 44.5% 46.9% 4.5%

I included RIM just for giggles.

But see the trend? Android market share is going down while iOS market
share is going up.

True. But we shouldn't assume that current trends continue
unchanged. A guess that one or the other is bigger at the end of
2013 is just a guess. The fact that all of the competitors to
Apple will not be using IOS could indicate that a competing OS would
be more common, at least if things moved to a two-OS horse race.

Pent up demand in part.

Recall iPhone 4 sale were flat in the quarter before the 4S came out -
it was released 2 weeks into the quarter beginning in Oct.

Need a few more months to see the longer term.

November is more or less when Sprint started selling iPhones, too. THAT
was your pent up demand (such as my wife and I-grin)

Don't buy one; it's soon to be replaced by the iSmile.

The iSmile is nice and all, but it uses much more power than the iGrin.
