I'm not eligible until Feb 25th for the upgrade pricing. But I'm planning
to skip the 4S and wait until the iPhone 5.

Wouldn't have bothered, but I just lost my 3GS.
So, guess I'll wander down to the AT&T store on Friday.
The person that gave me a new SIM card (I keep a blackberry
for backup) said she thinks they'll get enough to not
sell out the first day.

out some dough. Then again, the blackberry backup is tolerable...

Not going to pre-order. AT&T store people think they won't sell out

I'm waiting to see how iOS 5 runs on my iPhone 4, and whether I feel
like iOS 5 brings enough new functionality to my iPhone 4. If I'm still
not satisfied, I'll consider upgrading to the iPone 4S.

Well you could of course get a free 3GS with renewal. I'm squarely in the
middle. I'm eligible now and with my contract expiring January, I'm actually
considering bolting Apple & AT&T and dare I say it..... the new Android
Bionic. The bigger display is a real consideration for my older eyes. I'll
be checking both out at the mall before I jump.

Well, the Apple Webstore shiping dates have slipped, so the pre-orders
have already depleted Apple's stock ... so you might want to join the
waiting line outside your local store now (don't forget to wear your
Stormtrooper armour and blog every second of it for nobody else to want to
read). ;-)

I think you can do this, but you'll pay more than $150. The going
rate on ebay seems to be $400 to $500 depending on age/condition.

Craigslist looks similar. And I don't think you can buy an unlocked
iphone from AT&T.

Once you have one, you can use it on a by-the-month basis.
