Default New iPhone

New iPhone 4S in 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB sizes. A5 chip, much better camera
(8MP and better optics and lighting and software), and fully integrated
voice control assistant (Siri, based on the Siri product Apple bought).

There is no iPhone 5, no new form factor. The 4S is the same size as the
iPhone 4 and, except for the $399 price on the 64GB size, the prices are
the same.

I will be buying two of them because Siri is so damn cool my wife will
kill me if I don't get one for her.

The media IS the joke - as usual never actually checking the facts and
simply copying eahc other.

Nobody with a brain was really expecting a real "iPhone 5". Apple's
virtually standard practice has been to alternate releases as "speed
bumps" and "new design" - this year was almost certainly always going to
be just a "speed bump" release.

With the exception of a couple of third-party case designs, there was
never any real evidence of a new iPhoner design. This problem was caused
by rumour websites calling the next release "iPhone 5" and then lazy
journalists simply copying it not understanding what they were saying (as
usual).

In this case, the "rumour websites" included the Wall Street Journal, a
news outlet that used to be very respected. Now we see the impact of
Rupert Murdoch turning it into one of his rags.

WSJ is also the one that started the story about Sprint spending $20
billion to get iphone exclusive. The story was unbeleivable except that
it came from WSJ which I thought was still credible.

I think TMZ,s fake photo of Jobs was more trustable than the WSJ. At
least you know it was fake.

In fairness though, I think this is a case of Apple not managing
expectations properly. In the past, Apple always managed to leak enough
information so that the media would set the correct expectations and
people were not disapointed during the launch event.

Apple let the "5" monicker float around rumour mill for far too long.
Heck, there were iphone 5 knockoffs in chinese stores already and many
newspapgers had headilines about the iphone 5 launch in their morning
editions.

It makes me wonder if Steve Jobs was the one orchestrating the leaks
before and now Cook might be against that, trying to keep secrecy.

The advantage of today's "failure" (by media to propery predict) is that
next time around, the rumour mill may be far less active about the next
Apple product announcement.

But less speculation leads to less hype and less free publicity. Double
edged sword.

nope. the exclusive rumour was started by boy genius report. the wsj
only said that sprint was going to buy a lot of iphones.

Apple itself doesn't "leak" anything. Apple never discuses up-coming
products and is very strict about keeping things secret (with the
exception of giving a prototype to a fool who lost it in a bar!).

Any "leaks" have always been either from sub-contracted companies or plain
fakes by idiots who think they're being clever. These are then often
reported by the morons in the media as being actual facts because they
never bother to check.

There wil always be speculation about what Apple's next release will be.
Obviously there will be a rela iPhone 5 at some stage, so people will be
trying to work out what that specs that might have.

Apple didn't play the practical joke - the media did. If the media is
upset about that, perhaps the media shouldn't have made such assumptions.

Oxford will soon appear to explain this was not so.
