Default need info on jailbreaking

Really enjoy my new iPhone 3GS, so I don't want to destroy it. Are
there any recommended information sources that explains and/or teaches
jailbreaking? tia

There's only one step:

1. Do NOT do it.

There's little real reason to jailbreak an iPhone. :-)

Oh please. Get real. There are many valid reasons to want to jail break
your phone.

For instance, I jail broke my iPhone 3G so that I could write a script
that would transfer (via the 'scp' command-line tool) all voice mail
recordings from my phone to a folder in my Music folder so I have an
archive of all voice mail on my phone, even after they get automatically
deleted by AT&T. Jail breaking also allowed me to do wireless tethering
so that my WiFi-only iPad could connect to the net from the car or any
place without WiFi access.

Wikipedia has a good overview of which software you'll need to jail
break various models of the iPhone:

rule #1 do not pay anyone. all of the tools are free, however, some
people will try to sell you various things. do not pay.

all information about jailbreaking is here. read it thoroughly before
attempting anything.
<http://blog.iphone-dev.org/>

as for jailbreaking the 3gs, it depends what version firmware you have
on the phone.

if it's 4.0 or later, there is no jailbreak for it at the moment,
unless you already have jailbroken it (and not with spirit), which
given your question is not likely the case. that means no jailbreak for
now.

if it's 3.1.3, you need to use spirit, however, that won't work with
itunes 9.2 or later. if you have 9.2, you are stuck (or have to
backtrack it which is a pain in the ass).

if it's 3.1.2 or earlier, you should use pwnage, which can open the
door for a 4.0 jailbreak.

since you say it's a new 3gs, chances are it's running 4.0, which means
no jailbreak is available at this time. there should be one soon.

for most people, there isn't a compelling reason to jailbreak,
especially with 4.0.

that's why he said 'little real reason' not 'no reason at all.'

Now it's overtly legal, no matter what Apple says.

not quite. it's not a dmca violation but it still can be a eula and
terms of service violation.

Then he should have qualified it with "for most people".

> that's why he said 'little real reason' not 'no reason at all.'

Says you.

He instructed the OP NOT to do it. Is he also clairvoyant? Nobody here
knows yet whether the OP in fact has a reason to jail break.

I agree completely, except for the fact that it frees you up from only
being able to run apps from the App Store, allows you to customize
virtually every aspect of your iPhone, allows true multi-tasking, allows
you to run numerous apps you can't get from the App Store, and probably at
least a dozen other things I haven't thought of or just plain don't know.

OTOH, it also allows for viruses (none serious, yet), lock-ups, running the
battery down easily, without you knowing it until it's happened, not to
mention the disapproval of Apple and the iSteve (thats the biggie, of
course).

I would suggest that anyone who wants to jailbreak their phone to research
and weigh ALL the pros and cons before making a decision. Of course, you
can always go back to jail if it doesn't work out, something the naysayers
fail to mention when they try to intimidate you from doing it. In fact,
you'll have to go back if another version of iOS comes out while you own
the phone, which it most assuredly will. And every time they update the OS,
they update the protection from jailbreaking, and you have to wait until
the hackers figure out how to work their magic on the new version. Another
major disadvantage, I guess.

Think it through.

Only applies to USA and then only if it survives the likely
court challenge from Apple and/or AT&T.

Unless courts uphold the ruling and interpret it to make
contrary terms unenforceable.

Moreover, unless courts order otherwise, the ruling does
not prohibit Apple's current policy of trying to make it
risky and difficult. Nor will it be a defense for theft
of service.
