Default MD234C vs MC922LL

I've got two iPhone 4S 16GB Black phones on my desk right now with
different model numbers, anyone know what the difference between MD234C
and MC922LL might be?

The "model number" is A1387 according to MacTracker.

Referring to my iPhone 4 box, what you're looking at seems to be the
_part_ number.

Could be something like type of phone network each is designed for. Eg:
CDMA v. GSM ability.

Possible, but the iPhone itself calls it "Model" in the About screen.

Possible, except that that's not supposed to matter for the 4S, and both
came directly from Apple as unlocked GSM devices.
