With 38 years of law enforcement experience, I saw a number of people
with a "brief career of excitement and then go down in a blaze of
glory." They didn't inspire others, and I saw no signs of bravery
unless they were in situations where they had automatic weapons and the
people they opposed were unarmed. They didn't "inspire others" or
appear glamorous until the writers came along. They were a sad, sorry
lot, unable to face up to life and get something done, even the simple
dignity of getting a job and doing it well."

Admire Bernie Madoff? For what? Because thousands of families face
retirement in poverty because he stole 30 years of savings? And did he
do anything useful with what he stole? Did he contribute to a charity?
Pay for the medical treatment of a street musician with pneumonia? Give
a waitressing college student a scholarship? No. He bought cars and
houses and jewelry, and fed the rest into his con. If you find him
admirable for cojones, I suggest you go down to your local police
station or fire department and shake some hands.

I think you're confusing infamy with fame. He is well-known but nearly
universally reviled.

Celebrity? This thread is the first time I've seen or
heard the name since the day after his sentencing.
How long ago was that?

Ahh, that says something about you. It says something different
about me that I don't believe it.

Translation: SQ had a vague notion that Madoff was a celebrity so
that made it true.
