Default Iphone5 release: where to get information

OK, October 4 is coming soon.

What will you be watching on that day to get accurate information on
what the next iphone will have ?

I take it Apple will not have a live feed ?

Is is just me, or ha Apple been more tight lipped than in previous years
? Seems in previous years, there were more leaks.

I am wondering if the next iPhone will just be an "update" (faster
processor, better camera etc), or whether Apple has a big surprise that
will cause a lot fo "WOW, I didn't expect that!" comments.

Places like MacRumors.com and AppleInsider.com often have at least
constant updating if not an actual live feed.

Apple's website will of course be updated almost immediately to some
degree, but may depend on when the device(s) are actually available for
purchase before full information is there.

Apple is always tight-lipped about upcoming and future products. "Leaks"
are usually only rumours, often created by journalists and analysts to
make a story. That's basically why most people have been saying it will be
just an iPhone 4S and the updated/ redesigned iPhone 5 released next year.
The only "evidence" of an iPhone 5 are a few protective case designs that
have turned up.

If the past is prelude, there will not be a live feed. But almost every
Mac news web site will carry a text feed of the event.

We'll all find out in four days.

Sorry, but I won't be watching anything. It'll be all over the web in a
few days, and in Apple Stores at some point, so I'll see it when I see
it.

I still like my iPhone (4) and all, but the big excitement was the
release of the first model. I can only maintain edge-of-my-seat,
biting-my-nails anxiety for a short period. The next iPhone to get me
excited will have to pass the Turing Test in 12 esoteric subjects in 12
obscure languages.

I was pretty amazed at the capabilities of the 3G when it came out (got
it opening day) but didn't see any compelling reason to upgrade to a
3GS. The 4, on the other hand, was every bit as exciting as the 3. The
screen blew me away; dramatically-better readability to my 55-year-old
eyes (ok, 54 then). And it was FAST (relative to the 3). I literally
stopped reading newspapers and used the iPhone instead, almost
overnight. It met & exceeded my expecations. It essentially worked as
advertised (meaning that the demos you'd see Steve Jobs or a TV
advertisement show worked just as fast and responsively in real life,
something that rarely happens.

Sadly, my iPhone4 was pick-pocked in France this past July, so I'm now
using my old 3G and let me tell you, life sucks. Not really, but really.
It's "just" a phone with some utilities. It isn't responsive enough to
integrate into "real life" (the camera is even slower and resolution
really poor, scrolling web pages is jerky, text hard to read and apps
that, on an iPhone4 can sit in the background and sip from the battery
are forced to the foreground and eat the battery alive in no time).

So yeah, I'm excited and almost "needy" regarding the new iPhone.

I'll be quite happy if it's little more than an updated iPhone4. I've
seen the past, first-hand. It's not so fun.

It is difficult to imagine what they could significantly improve,
hardware-wise. The screen is already better than your eyes.
CPU/RAM/storage/battery seem unlikely to be massively better given
that there have been no major breakthroughs in technology that
I recall. It can't get a lot smaller without the screen being smaller
and hence worse. The camera could be a bit better but frankly I don't
care. iOS could improve significantly but as I understand it the
enhancements have already been released to developers and are nice,
but not revolutionary.

If it does actually turn out to be exciting, I'll be impressed.

Asn an APPL shareholder, I have an interest to see how Apple makes the
presentation, how Cook resents himself, and whether Apple can generate a
lot of "WOW!" or whether the next iPhone will be just humbug.

It would not surprise me if Apple were to announce LTE support. The
market has been conditioned to not expect it, so this would be the
perfect surprise.

Perhaps LTE is too much to ask, but Apple would do well if it were able
to surprise us and prove the pundits' speculation/predictions wrong.

They could make the frame a bit smaller and/or make the LCD a bit
larger. The unit is likly to be thinner and lighter as well. Standard
expectations.

Personally, I would rather see mechanical focus and better optics than
increased megapixels, but from a marketing point of view, more
megapixles wins unfortunatly. On the other hand, a thinner iphone makes
it impossible to improve the optical qualities of the camera.

At the end of the day, the smartphone amrket is becoming mature with
most manufacturers having implemented what is the state of the art today
and evolving incrememtally as technology improves.

Perhap Apple could surprise us with price with more affordable unlocked
iPhone with software that won't let networks disable menus on unlocked
phones.

In the next iphone is not going to be revolutionary, then perhaps Apple
will have aucceeded in lowering production costs to a point where it can
get a significant price reduction.

I will be following the announcement on my twitter feed.

Nope.

Apple is always tight-lipped.

A lot of people are wondering. I doubt there will be any shocks as to
the hardware. Some people might be surprised at the voice-recognition,
assuming rumors are true and it makes it in to 5.0.

The new notification center thingy they showed will make a HUGE
difference to the people in my house, and iMessage will save us $25 a
month.
