Default iPhone/iPad locator

Anyone know anything about "followmee" ?

Having my phone periodically send its location to a server
I don't control makes me hesitant. Add the fact that it
has no visible means of support, and the paranoia increases.

No ads on their website, and the service is completely free.
Hmmm.

The ideal locator (for me) would be an app where
- Lat & Long are encrypted, and the encryption
is sent to the IP/port _I_ specify, or as a CGI
param to a URI _I_ specify.

Anyone know of such?

(Maps, tracks, etc. nice but not necessary.)

It's strange you haven't mentioned Find My iPhone...

E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my very hungry SPAM

Apple page says it does work on my iPad, but it actually
doesn't. When I try to put in my Apple ID, as soon as
I tap in the password field, it adds "@me.com" to the ID.

Apple's website and the app store listing says it works on iPhone _4_and
iPad. Comment at the app store (from someone who
obviously downloads things without reading their descriptions)
complains that on his 3GS it tells him it cannot be used on this device

On iPad, it will not accept my Apple ID because it thinks all
Apple IDs are e-mail addresses. But Apple says I can change my
ID to an e-mail address by going to a website that is down.

I guess it's a marketing gimmick--we'll make it free, IF you will
buy a newer device.

Ah, that's it. It isn't free. They make it sound like it is,
but actually, it is three dollars for the app.

The Apple version of Find My Phone
<http://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/find-my-iphone/id376101648?mt=8>
is free and does work on the iPhone 3GS (and iPad), but does require a
MobileMe account. With the iPhone 4, you could set up a free account
just for Find My Phone. For the iPhone 3GS you need a paid account.
New MobileMe accounts are no longer available, but next week there
should be the free iCloud to provide the Find My Phone service.

You could always simply superglue one of those whistle-response keyring
devices to your iPhone. ;-)

Apple's marketing pages state that it works in the 4 and the iPad.
A dissatisfied customer whined that his 3GS told him the app was
incompatible with his device.

I do have a free account, set up from the iPad. So if you are
correct and they are not, maybe I could have gotten it to work
that way. Not that it matters now. Either the busboy that
cleared the table tossed it in the dishwasher or he stole it
and was smart enough not to use it on that sim card.
