Default iPhone 4S not charging properly

I put my 4S on the charger before I went to bed last night, and checked it
this morning. Only 96% charged. It was on the charger for about 6 hrs. This
is a USB charger, so it doesn't charge as quickly as a wall socket, but 6
hrs should be more than enough. It usually is. I also notice the same thing
on my original 4S (was a 16G model, which I upgraded to 32G a couple of
weeks ago) one night. Anyone have any idea how it can fully charge most
times, but once in a while it only partially charges when it has more than
enough time to fully charge? BTW, it was charging when I plugged it in both
times, and was charging still in the morning.

As I'm typing, it occurred that my computer automatically goes to sleep at
10pm, unless I tell it not to. The first time, with my first 4S, it could
have gone to sleep. Does it charge off the USB when hibernating?

But last night, this wasn't the case because I was up past 10, when it's
set to hibernate. So it wasn't hibernating. Any ideas?

My iPod won't charge when my PC sleeps. The first time i tried it took
a fully charged iPod to empty overnight.

Apple say here http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1476 : "Your computer must
be turned on and not in sleep or standby mode; otherwise, the battery
may drain instead of charge."

I get the same from time to time. I don't worry about it. Next time
around it's usually fully charged. Either the voltage on the USB is a
hair low or the charging algorithm in the iPhone is not calibrating
properly. (Displays one thing but the internal figure is something else).

it depends on the computer. recent mac laptops supply power on usb
during sleep. i think older ones did not.

Thanks to all!

Makes sense. I believe I read somewhere that the unpowered hub has less
output than one directly off the computer (or a powered one). Tonight, I'll
plug the iPhone's USB charger into an iMac USB port instead of the hub,
make sure it doesn't hibernate, and see if it happens again.

I have a 4s and it charges and holds a charge as good as any iPhone i've
ever had (had a 4 and several 3Gs). I realize that a problem exists and
am glad my iPhone is not one with A problem. I have not upgraded from
iOS 5 because my iPhone is working flawlessly as far as I can see and if
I don't see a problem why rock the boat?

I haven't had the battery run-down issue that others have had. Probably
because I turned off most apps requests for Location Services and/or
Notifications. I don't need to be notifed every time someone posts a reply
to my Facebook page nor do I need every app I own (over 100) to know
exactly where I am all the time. There are a few that need to know, like
Maps, for example, but most don't. I shut off all the extraneous stuff like
that from the beginning, and haven't had a problem.

The problem I posted here is entirely different.

I have the battery problem in my 10-day-old iPhone 4S and it has aught
to do with Location Services or anything else under the control of the
user. It has to do with a software problem that Apple are working to
fix. The firmware update has reportedly been delayed a bit, as Apple
wants to be sure it's right.

It's worth noting that running GPS, maps, and all sorts of "extraneous
stuff" (which is not at all extraneous to those who want to use it for
any reason) has no discernible effect on battery life on iPhone 4,
offering further evidence that Apple is correct in calling this a
firmware issue in iPhone 4S.

I agree with almost everything that you have said and almost everything that
you will say in your entire life.

I'm curious: Have you tried doing a restore? That fixed the problem for
me.

It did it again last night! I just woke up, it's been on the charger
since 11, and it's 97% charged. Weird. I think I'll call Apple Care
tomorrow.
