Default iPhone 4s battery issue

For those interested, here is a recent report about an issue causing iPhone 4S
batteries to drain prematurely:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology...y-location-ser
vices-bug?newsfeed=true

Question: the iPhone 4S has removed the numeric percentage displaying the amount
of battery power left and replaced it with an icon. What does the new icon
indicate?

TIA

Alf

Actually it's not the 4S, it's IOS 5.

You can turn the percentage back on by going to Settings, then Usage,
Battery Percentage. I believe this was the same before.

The icon indicates how much charge you have left, just like the
percentage. The more of the battery icon is green, the more charge you have
left.

I think you mean Settings > General > Usage > Battery Percentage.

Actually I am asking about the icon that looks like a lock with a circle around
it. It doesn't show on my wife's 4, just my 4S.

Thats shows the screen is locked in portrait view not landscape. Double
click the home button and move the icons in the bottom tray all the way
to the left to toggle this on and off.
I hope this works for you. To check it open Safari on both iPhones and
turn the iPhone from portrait to landscape positions and see if the page
turns...john

I haven't noticed any significant change in battery drain on my iPhone 4.

That signifies that your iPhone is locked against switching from
portrait to landscape orientation and vice-versa when you rotate it.

To enable/disable orientation switching go to the home screen and press
the depressed circle under the display *twice* . The icons on the main
region of your display will dim and you will see at the bottom of the
display a single row of undimmed icons representing the apps that are
open. Swipe your finger on this row from left to right and you will see
the orientation icon at left. Touch to lock/unlock.

If after the double-press of the depressed circle you swipe your finger
from right to left until you can go no further you will see the icons
for all running applications. To quit an app, touch one of those icons
and hold for a moment until the icons wiggle. Then touch the
minus-sign-in-a-circle at the top left of all of the icons that
represent apps that you want to quit. The icon(s) will disappear and
the app(s) will quit.

To return to normal operating mode, press the depressed circle once.

The app-quitting procedure described above is not to be confused with
the practice of touching and holding an icon in normal mode (i.e., with
all icons displayed normally) until the icons wiggle. In that procedure
you may 1) rearrange icons within a screen or move them to another
screen by dragging with one finger. 2) delete an app from your device
by touching the x-in-a-circle at the top left of the icon. If you
delete an app from your device by accident (not so easy, as you get a
confirmation dialogue before deleting) you may use the App Store app to
re-install it. Certain Apple apps that came with your iPhone cannot be
deleted.

A minor correction: The iPhone can be locked only in portrait orientation;
if it's in landscape orientation when you lock the orientation, it switches
to portrait and locks there.

(The iPad, OTOH, can be locked in either orientation.)

On my 3Gs I don't see any difference in battery life since upgrading to
iOS 5. I like iOS 5.
