Default IOS5, ipad and Linux

OK, so with IOS-5, you don't need a Mac or PC to activate the device.

But what about someone with Linux (no mac or PC). How would they be able
to transfer music to their device ?

Will icloud have a platform neutral way to upload music/movies so they
then get sent to the device ?

Or will Linux user continue to be "iPad" impaired ?

Anyone who is tech-savvy enough to choose Linux knows going in that
s/he will be greatly impaired in many pursuits that users of mainstream
OS's -- Mac OS and Windows -- take for granted.

They find their workarounds sometimes, and tell themselves that a
less-than-third-rate program like GIMP is as good as Photoshop, but
they're kidding themselves.

Considering that they could have their Unix and iTunes and Photoshop
simultaneously in one box -- any Mac -- one has to wonder if some Linux
users choose Linux for masochistic reasons.

Yes, iOS and iCloud will make iPods / iPhones / iPads completely
independent of any computer. Music / movies / apps are sent direct to the
device and the iCloud can back it all up ... no need for a computer at
all.

The exception being if you want to do something like "rip" your own CDs,
then you will still need a Mac or Windows computer running iTunes software
to connect the device to.

Perhaps my friend then needs to wait for iPad3 which could solve this
with either USB disk support, or a built in SD card reader.

For instance, if the IPad allowed one to import music/videos/photos from
a USB stick, it would still hide the internal file system, while
allowing the iPad to be truly independent of a host computer.

OR, if users could upload their ripped CDs to iCloud via the web so they
would then go onto their iPad.

Or, if not 3, then perhaps 4 or 5 or 6 or 7 or 8 or 9 or 10 or....

Or, your friend could just give it up and buy a personal computer.

He is a Linux guy. I am trying to convince him to get an Ipad for his 2
sons and wife.

I have to try to be as pragmatic as possible and hide my allegiance to
the Church of Apple so that I don't look too biased.

I haven't looked into it fully yet, but I would guess that iCloud access
is only via iOS or iTunes (Mac OS and Windows). There may or may not be
unofficial Linux software for accessing iOS and / or iTunes.

You can of course get external storage devices to use with iOS devices,
which may be a way around the Linux problem ... if those storage devices
can also be connected to the computer in some way.

I wouldn't bother trying to convince him of anything. He sounds like an
OS hobbyist, not a user. Sheesh! He denies his family the experience of
using personal computers by not letting them have a real computer? OK.
sad, but not my business. Even with iCloud, they won't enjoy an iPad if
they don't have a computer, Mac OS or Windows, for adding ripped CD's
and DVD's, home video, and the like.

You know me--11 Macs. But in this situation if I were advising I would
tell him to get his family a computer, whether Mac or cheap-o
PeeCee--so long as its not Linux.
