Default iOS 4.1 Next Week

according to ModmyI:

iOS 4.1 is right around the corner and set to launch next week. This release
is going to fix many bugs including proximity, bluetooth, and iPhone 3G
bugs. It also adds in the long awaited game center for multiplayer gaming.
Ahead in November we can expect iOS 4.2 which will not only update the
iPhone it will also bring the iPad up to current standards.

Yup, and we've been discussing all that for the past four days, ever since
Steve Jobs announced it all.

I'll be dropping my jail break to get it. : )

To me, what stood out of the 4.1 announcement was the improvement in the
camera application that will emulate what older smartphone shave done
for a while: ability to take good pictures in "beach/snow" (high
contrast) scenes. (I think Jobs called it high dynamic range).

This is a genuine improvement to the picture taking capability that
fills a weakness that iphone had against other camera phones.

Wonder if it will include a PRINT button so you can print over Bluetooth
like my old Motorola Z6m from Alltel? I haven't found a single
smartphone with a PRINT button for the pictures that some carrier hasn't
trashed or was never available in the first place.

My Z6m doesn't have wifi, being a simple sliderphone, but the Bluetooth
printing sure is handy and would be even more so on iPhone that has no
microSD to simply plug into a printer, directly.

I'm betting NOT......NOT available on iPhone

4.2 will print over WiFi; don't know whether it will print over bluetooth
too.

Print to what? What sort of print server will it talk to?

Directly to a WiFi enabled printer, I presume. Maybe to a Mac or PC that
has printer sharing enabled. You don't have to have a print server to
print.

We'll find out for sure when 4.2 is released.

That would require the client to know how to format its output for that
specific printer type.

I'd call any system that can support remote connections for printing a
"print server" :-)

But thinking about that just now, when I configure a Windows PC to use
the printer on my home network, I have to specify the specific printer
make and model, (I might have even had to install drivers, but it's been
a while) so the requirement for formatting the output still exists.

Maybe.

Print drivers.

You still don't need them if you can print directly to the printer.

I recently bought a new printer, and all I had to do was plug it in and
connect it to the computer with a USB cable. Thanks to Apple's Bonjour
(i.e., Zeroconf), everything just worked. Of course, that's because the
appropriate drivers are part of OS X.

Unless printing is pulled from 4.2 before it is released, we will.
