Even if it wasn't a SE Cybershot, Sony has had some pretty impressive
cameras for a while now. Prior to my iPhone I had a Sony w810i, and
despite technically being a 2.0Mp camera it put out some of the best
pictures I'd seen in a camera phone to date.

It was fast, pictures were sharp, worked in varying lighting conditions,
decent colour balance, and surprisingly little grain/noise.

This phone is obviously somewhat dated now, but at the time I stopped
carrying a point and shoot and replaced it with that phone and even
today I'd probably take it over the iPhone 3GS' camera.

Depends on the phone- my SE Xperia X1 takes pretty crummy pictures as well,
but it's not surprising- the phone is actually built for Sony by HTC, who
wouldn't recognize a good camera if it jumped up and slapped them. In
full daylight with subjects that don't move it can take a barely
acceptable picture. Other than that, it's pathetic. The SE Cybershot
phones I've played with, however, do a pretty darn nice job, particularly
for a cell phone, and could standup well to low-end P&S cameras (without
analog zooms.)

Apparently not. The 3GS and 4G both have 1.75micron pixel size
(http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/20...hutterbugs.ars),
but the 3GS seems to have a better time with highlight areas. The 3G
used a 2.2micron pixel size. Neither of those are bleeding-edge; 1.4 is
common, and 1.1 is making its rounds.

That *is* true. Whether by software or hardware.
