Default I can't get the iphone to install the update software

I plug it in, and Itunes says there is a new software update and asks if
I want it. So I tell it to update. The software downloads and then
Itunes just sits there and doesn't install it. So I click sync and it
goes through a few things and starts downloading again. The next time
instead of clicking on sync, I click update. And it does the same thing
all over. Now v4 has been downloaded three times and it still isn't on
my phone. Can someone tell me what is wrong? And thanks in advance

It never occurred to you that these "few things" might be crucial to
answering your question? Without actual details, all you will get here
is educated (probably mixed in with not-so-educated) guesses.

More information is required. See above.

In case you're not, you need to be running iTunes 9.2

Shouldn't it prompt the user to upgrade to iTunes 9.2 before even
allowing the iOS update to start? My girlfriend's sister just updated
her iPod touch and was prompted to update iTunes to 9.2 before it even
let her download the software.
