Default Find my iPhone

I was exploring Mobile Me, and tried out the Find my iPhone feature. Â*It
located two phones, one was at my house, and the other was at the Apple
Store where I exchanged it yesterday. Â*So I used the remote wipe feature of
Find my iPhone to wipe the one at the store; I didn't want anyone there to
be able to copy my contacts list or see my stored email on the phone, if
they hadn't done so already. Â*They probably wouldn't have, but why take
chances?

A better approach is to wipe the phone before it leaves your hands.

Michelle, since you were able find your iPhone in your house I am
wondering what sort of accuracy you get with your phones GPS.

On my iPhone (3GS) it is only about 30 metres - lousy and useless for
find the phone as my house isn't 30 metres in any direction

Well, it didn't show me where in the house it is. And sometimes, it is off
by as much as one house. Right now, though, it's off by less than 10 feet,
and that is indoors. But it's using cell tower and base station
triangulation as well as GPS, so that might be refining the location
somewhat.

But one thing you can do with Find My iPhone is have the phone emit a sound
for two minutes. So once you're near the phone, you trigger that sound and
home in on it.

If I had thought of that, I would have. The Apple Genius did need to check
the serial number, though, against the sales record.

the serial number is not wiped. that would be rather interesting if it
did.

True, but he would have had to reactivate the phone in order to retrieve
the serial number.

What puzzles me is why they left the phone turned on after exchanging it.

If you have another phone with you. If all you have is a laptop or iPad,
then trigger the sound.

iPhones these days will tell you two things without being activated.
One of these is the IMEI, the other I don't recall but might well be
the serial number ;-)
