Wrong.

It's almost impossible to make a Windows user who refuses to give Mac OS
a try with an open mind understand that being in full control isn't
always indicative of a better user experience, and that quite often, the
compromise of less control is worth the aded benefit of stuff that just
works.

That, too, give read-only access to lots of folders and files. If you
want complete access, jail breaking is the only way to go.

I thought the issue of control and the restrictive OS was only with
the iPhone. Are you saying a Mac desktop computer has the same
issues compared with a Windows desktop computer? I've only used
Windows and Linux so this is news to me about Apple. There was
something in the news the other day about the need to jailbreak a
droid now. That's just stupid. Bad business. Lame. Etc., etc...

It just won't work.

No; it's just that with the Mac, you hardly ever need to.

This isn't the case.

Remember that Macs are running a unix-type operating system at the
base level (like linux) and you have the same level of control.

No "jailbreaking" is required, for example, to log in as root and do
whatever you want.

The difference is that 99% of the time, you don't _need_ to do that
since for most things Apple has provided good ways of doing them
_without_ editing text files in /etc. (Not 100% of the time, but most
of the time.)

Well, as I said, this isn't apple's business model for their
computers.

But as far as your assertion that it "won't work" - that seems to be
contradicted by the success of the iPod and the iPhone. It _does_ seem
to "work," though like you, I'd prefer that Apple not do it.

All operating systems - yes, even Windows - have limitations. All the
same, some Windows users who have never given Mac OS a genuine try bitch
and moan about very silly things like "you can't change the font in
such-and-such app to blah blah" or what-have-you, in an attempt to
justify their closed-minded refusal to give it a genuine try. The point
is, you can't force people to embrace things. That's a decision only
they can make themselves.

OK, that's interesting; the config files are in /etc just like on a
linux system. I spend a lot of time at the command prompt or base
level with linux but prefer a gui interface. Thanks for the info. My
next toy might be a Mac.

Yes, what I was trying to say is that this is a bad business model.
There needs to be a compromise in there somewhere. You might think
this is a little foolish but, I had to get the new iPhone 4 because
it was the latest gadget. I haven't done the jailbreak thing "yet"
although I may give it a try. It's about curiosity. I'm a geek;
can't help it.

I recently decided against getting an iPad because of this issue and
also the fact that you are unable to connect a USB memory stick to
the iPad. That just didn't work for me.

This is still a dilemma for me because I want something like the
iPad and there doesn't seem to be anything else comparable on the
market.

Take it from someone who used to use Linux almost exclusively at home,
but has since switched to all Macs (one or two running Windows due to
employer requirements, but through VMware Fusion / Parallels, so i don;t
have to restart to run Windows junk):

That's a purchase you won't regret!

You should visit an Apple store and ask some questions. It may turn out
your concerns are addressable.
