Default Extremely slow application update - UK

I have just updated several apps on the Iphone4.

The updating of most apps is fairly quick (minutes) but TomTom has
been running ~10 hours and the bar graph shows about 30% done.

The ADSL here is 5.3mbits/sec, and the Iphone is otherwise behaving OK
speed-wise, web browsing etc.

The full TT Europe is about 1.5GB and even if they re-download all of
that, it should not take anywhere near this long.

Does the app updating server ration the data, when it sees a large
update? I think Apple use "Akamai" so something like that, here in the
UK.

Why aren't you doing it on the computer you sync to? That would be MUCH
faster.....

Because they both run off the same ADSL connection

I have just looked at my ISP logs for the last 2 days.

I see 3GB of data on each of those 2 days.

In that time I updated 5 little apps, and TomTom whose database I know
is 1.5GB. On the first of those 2 days, the update ran extremely
slowly and eventually ground to a halt. Evidently, however, the Ipad
still managed to download 3GB... On the 2nd day I had another go,
early in the (UK) morning when most of America would be asleep, and it
completed in about 3 hours, but still managed to download another 3GB.

Something strange is going on here. Quite possibly a combination of
the update servers grinding to a virtual halt, and the progress bar on
the app icon telling lies about how far it has got.

I may be wrong here, but apps over 20mb in size are usually better
downloaded via iTunes on the computer. For starters, the computer can
be set not to go into sleep mode (I use a little app on my Macbook
called Caffeine for that - it's free). The iPad or iPhone goes into
sleep mode, and I'm not sure if the download continues in that mode.
I've always done the bigger ones on the computer - they seem
significantly faster than on the phone or iPad anyway.

As a matter of fact, yesterday, I tapped "update all" and after
a couple of apps updated, the iPhone said something like "hey,
this app is over twenty megabytes and you have to use WiFi or iTunes."

Didn't happen on this 3GB update on TomTom.

That's because you didn't initiate the upgrade on 3G. The warning only
appears when you try to update a large app via cell data and directs you
to use WiFi or iTunes.
If you initiate the download over WiFi, the device has nothing to
complain about!

An update:

I have just got a new Ipad2 (the old one developed a duff HDMI output
which stopped working after a few mins, and its wifi stopped
connecting to most access points - this stuff is all over the Apple
forums so I am not the only one) and I had to re-download all the
apps.

The only big app was TomTom which is described on the apple store as
1.8GB. The other apps were mostly small, say a few MB each.

The total data download was SIX GB!

How can 1.8GB (the size of which I have incidentally verified by
looking where Itunes dumps it on my PC after a Backup of the device)
take up as 6GB when downloaded from the apple shop?

I know that emailing binaries causes them to expand by about 2x, due
to the UUENCODE encoding, but this is not used on HTTP or HTTPS, where
binaries should not get expanded.

Maybe there was some Icloud stuff going on also. I have now disabled
all Icloud options.
