Default Don't drop your iPhone 4

The glass is very fragile. I've been using a belt clip designed for the
iPhone 3G and 3GS; it works sort of, if you make sure to press it firmly
into place. I didn't, and the phone fell out of it, landing front side
flat on concrete. The result was a spider-web of cracks. But the phone
still worked.

I took it to the nearby Apple Store, and they managed to fit me in with an
appointment at the Genius Bar.

The Apple Genius took a look at it, asked how it happened, and I told him
the truth, that it fell out of its holster and landed on concrete. I told
him that I got it on the first day of release, so it was only eight days
old.

He said that he was supposed to charge $199 to replace it, but he was going
to do it for free. Less than fifteen minutes later, I had a replacement
iPhone.

I bought a bumper for it, just in case it dropped again. The bumper is not
just a piece of rubber, as everyone here has been saying. Although the
edges are rubber, the center is hard plastic. It also has silver buttons
that fit over the volume and sleep buttons. There's a cutout for the mute
button, though. The bumper definitely costs Apple more than the ten or
twenty cents that some people have whinged about, but I don't know what the
cost of goods and manufacture is. My major complaint is that the phone
won't fit into the dock with the bumper on it, and I'm sure that it won't
fit in any third-party belt holsters like the Elan Clip.

true, but $29 is still a bit steep for what it is. there are more
elaborate cases for older iphones that cost the same or less.

that's a problem with nearly every case. however, it may fit in the
universal dock, and at least one case comes with a dock adapter,
although i don't know if they have cases for the iphone 4 yet.

some cases have a slip off bottom piece so the normal dock can still be
used, but that's a pain and can scratch, although maybe not so much the
iphone 4.

weird, iPhone4 case isn't glass, is a patented ceramic (patented lot
years ago), a bit sensible to scraps but should be a lot moreelastic

check using sun or light reflex on spiderweb crack if is really the
case broken or is the transparent oil-repellent coating on it broken

It really is glass.

It really was cracked. I could feel it. The Apple Genius could see and
feel it. As I wrote in my original message; he replaced the phone.

Wow, you are very lucky to have a replacement iPhone that fast! I'm
still waiting on the reserve list at the local Apple Store for my
iPhone 4.

I think that I'm going to end up buying a bumper for my iPhone when it
comes out, even though they are priced the way they are.

Must have had all the impact on a single small rock.
I dropped my 3GS onto its face more than once, with
and without a screen protector. The only time there
was any damage was when the drop was almost a meter,
and it had a screen protector. The damage was to the
plastic add-on, not the phone. The protector was ugly
even before the drop, and majorly gouged after, so
I returned to my previous M.O. of not covering the
screen. For fingerprints, I just “polish the Apple”
on my shirt or pants once in a while.

The protector was far worse than the glass for
fingerprints.

Most cases have a sort of frame around the screen
(else they would fall off). In a face-down fall,
that frame protects the glass from anything smaller
than the thickness of the from.

I keep mine in my shirt pocket and don’t bend over.
So any drops are blamed on slippery fingers.

Nope; it was flat concrete pavement.

> I dropped my 3GS onto its face more than once,

I've dropped my 3G on its face too, but keep in mind that the metal bevel
keeps the face from contact with the ground/floor in a face-down fall. The
iPhone 4 doesn't have that bevel.

Yup, especially with the oleophobic coating on the 3GS and 4.

Exactly; just as I wrote, above. The iPhone 4 doesn't have that.

They have a stock of replacement phones in each store. I don't know how
many, though.
