Default Dock cable shrinking?

For various reasons, I now have four dock cables even though I only have
two iP*s

_One_ of those cables is doing something weird.

Either the insulation is growing or the cable is shrinking.

The insulation at the big end sticks down past the end of the plug
and folds back to where the cable joins the plug. And it got that
way gradually. It had to crack to keep from bunching up at the plug,
so I can peek inside. As far as I can tell, there is absolutely no
damage to the shielding.

The cable still does what it is supposed to do, charging and syncing.

I'm not aware of treating this cable any differently from the rest.
Well, I have probably had it in my pocket a few more times than the
others.

?!?

Yep. That's a common problem with this cable. I think the plastic used
in the shielding is somehow at fault. I've had several of these cables
since purchasing a couple iPhone 3Gs way back when. To date, three of
the cables have shown this exact symptom. And we are very careful with
them. We were easily able to get Apple to exchange them each time by
scheduling a visit to the Genius bar.

Apple recently settled a class action lawsuit where MagSafe power cables
were fraying and shorting out. (Lucky for me, I haven't had that
problem!) It wouldn't surprise me if they were exchanging these cables
in an effort to avoid a similar class action suit.

Well, to nitpick, I think it is the insulation and not the shielding.
But I never heard of insulation that grows in length and not in
diameter. I've used "shrinktube" before. That's a plastic tube that
shrinks in diameter when heated.

Hmmm. Suppose that could be negotiated by mail?
Nearest Apple store is more than 150 km and
I try to stick to pedal power.

Insulation is what I meant.

You can have Apple call you directly from the support section of the
website. They can set up a replacement method that works for you.

Thanks!
(Now I have to decide whether it's worth the trouble.
The thing still works....)

Ours still worked as well, but we didn't let that stop us. ; )
