Default Comparing carriers

Has anyone done a recent cost comparison of carrier plans, using the same
equipment and perks? Getting close to decision making time for me, and
would love to save some monthly $$. Don't need lots of calls and I use
mostly wi-fi so 3G or 4G not important. The one drag is one of my 3 lines
needs unlimited texting, the others minimal.

You'll have to do your homework on this. Different people have different
usage patterns, and networks tweak their offerings to be ever so
slightly different from each other.

So while network A may offer a package that is substantially lower than
B for a certain type of user, the reverse may be true for another type
of user.

This is a complicated thing to measure since there are so many plan
variations. You can choose eqipment and perks to make any of the 4
major US carriers look cheapest. Much more to the point are the
eqipment and perks _you_ need/want.

For example, because I have wifi available to me so much of the time,
I can get by with a data plan. I mostly use my phone for brief
logistical calls, so I get by with a prepaid by the minute plan. And
then I have to text with my kids, but that is also low volume enough
so that a by-the-text charge makes most sense for me.

T-mobile's prepaid is 10 cents a minute in the US if you do it right,
and texts are I think also 10 cents each.

AT&T also has a 10 cent per minute calling plan, but then texts cost
20 cents each (or unlimited for $20 per month). They used to have
1000 texts for $10 per month, but I think that is gone now.

So these sorts of plans work well for me (and t-mobile wins), but they
wouldn't work well for other people's usage patterns.

If you're happy with your current iPhone, you might want to consider T-
Mo's no-subsidy ("Value") plans.

You don't get deeply discounted phones, instead your "subsidy" is a rate
reduction vs. their traditional plans.

3 lines with 1000 shared minutes and unlimited texting is $65/month.
Data is $5/line for 200MB, $10/line for unlimited (throttled to EDGE
speed after 2GB, which doesn't matter on the iPhone, since it only gets
EDGE on T-Mo anyway! It works fine for light browsing and email, and is
certainly "good enough" between WiFi hotspots.)

If you need new phones for the kids, and don't like T-Mo's "value"
(unsubsidized) prices, you can always grab a few prepaid T-Mo phones in
blister packs at WalMart or Target, *don't* activate them, and just put
the SIMs T-Mo gives you with the value plan in them.

Sounds like a great deal, and I'll consider it. Any commitment required?

I haven't seen ATT's Senior (voice) Plan listed on any of the comparison
charts, but they do still offer it. $10 cheaper, fewer minutes, no rollover
& they have to verify your age as >65. I did it in person at the ATT store;
I don't know how they do it for online orders; Apple doesn't know it
exists.

I did it on line; they didn't ask for any verification, but warned me that
if I were lying, there would be serious consequences. (Their language was
more polite than that, though.)

The plan includes 200 anytime minutes, 500 night/weekend minutes, and
unlimited mobile to mobile minutes; the cost is $29.99 a month plus data
plan and taxes, etc.
