Wrong. The big consumer of power is the display.
You can use your iPhone as iPod, playing music for hours which does use
the CPU - if you don't use the display it'll last twice as long...

The iPhone has 2 CPUs - one for the iPod Touch, one for the additional
cell phone. When you press the sleep button and don't have any
background task (navigation, audio, ...) running, the iPod Touch CPU
sleeps. The baseband CPU only sleeps in airplane mode.
