it uses a little memory but if ios needs it back it will automatically
terminate them, presumably least recently used.

depends on the app. some have long startup times. however, with
suspend/resume, you go back to exactly where you left off, so even if
the app does start quickly you still save time in getting back to where
you were, assuming that's possible.

I like to "cleanup" once in a while. Also, if I turn on 3G data, I want
to end all apps that could use it, so that only the app I start will use
the expensive 3G data while it is on.

or just disable data entirely.

Mine is called Remove Background. I like the "multitasking" and like this
way of closing them all down at once.

You don't see any battery life degrading, even with a couple dozen open?

Not any more than with none open.

In real life perhaps. But if you have enabled SSH deamon, you should
note that you can still connect to your iphone even if it is asleep (I
think there may be time limit after which the deamon is also put to sleep).

So technically, background apps can consume CPU power while your unit is
asleep. Apple has done a fair job of limiting this and preventing some
run-away infinite loop forcing CPU to run at 100% even if the unit is
asleep (which would drain battery quickly).

Except that they may not be (apart from the simple list keeping track of
which apps have been launched, which has barely any overhead).

The app will only be suspended and held in RAM for as long as it suits
the OS to do so. If the OS needs the memory for something else (such as
the user running another memory hungry app), suspended apps are dumped
from RAM and will have to be relaunched from flash if the user switches
back to them.

For apps which can run in the background, I agree it would be nice to at
least have an indication that it is running.

For suspended apps, there is no need to be concerned at all.

Closing down all the running apps is easy-peasy ... simply turn the iPhone
off. ;-)

So it's all or nothing ?
Close the lot or use the retarded iOS4 MT to shut down individual apps ?

Have you tried Multifl0w - or are you unJB'n ?
