Default Beeping and Buzzing

I've been futzing with my settings since I got my iPhone. I want it
to ring and vibrate when I get calls. I have a bunch of
notifications on.

But every few minutes I get a quiet beep and short buzz, and I can't
trace down what causes this. I swipe down to see notifications.
Nothing. I check my phone - nothing. I have no idea what it's
buzzing about. What good is a beep or buzz if I can't trace down
what it's for?

So I have two questions:
1. How do I find out what the beep is trying to tell me?
2. Once I know, how do I turn off that beep/buzz (let me see the
notification later).

(I accidentally posted this in the wrong forum earlier)

I will. I never power off my iPad nor iPod except when they got
stuck, and didn't know there was any advantage to rebooting my iPhone.

I'll get back to this thread later today with my results.

Didn't work. But I infer that the beeping isn't normal, that
there's some way I can turn it off.

I'm sure there is. It's likely coming from an application you have
installed.

There's no good way to hunt it down, unfortunately. Watch for any
applications where a badge counter changes. Gmail's App, for example,
doesn't display a popup but does play a sound, vibrate, and update the
counter.

On mine, there's a little switch on the side for turning the sound off ;-)

I want to hear and feel the phone ring. It's those other
notifications that I want to be quiet and non-vibrating.

Good idea. If I see it changing, I can play with notifications for
that particular app, provided it has them.

I traced it down. It's my wife's .me e-mail. I'm not finding how
to turn off its notifications. Actually, I don't even want her
e-mail on my phone at all except when we're on vacation. And no
notifications then.
