Chill, Michelle. I'm not suggesting Apple didn’t say that.
In fact, it’s what I would expect them to say. I'm just
suspicious of the objectivity of someone who uses a term
like “Cult of Mac.”

"Cult of Mac" is the name of a web site. I doubt that they're any less
objective than any other Mac-oriented web site.

Yesterday they were actively promoting software piracy. I guess that's
objective?

That's what I thought, but it doesn't

what does it do or not do? if the iphone was already activated,
removing the old sim should still work, with it saying 'no sim' at the
top. if it's no longer activated for some reason, you'll need to
activate it with a sim in it and then remove it.

When I got my new #4 at the AT&T store, the transferred my data from old
to new, and handed my back both.
Of course, the transfer of data was very incomplete, and I had to later
set up all my email servers again.
But I turned on the old 3G to see what worked, and I got some sort of
message that it was inactive. I'd have to check Again for the exact wording.

if it says connect to itunes, then put a sim in it (deactivated is
fine, just has to be at&t, assuming it's locked) and let itunes
activate the phone. afterwards, remove the sim. if it's a deactivated
sim, you can leave it in, it doesn't matter if it's deactivated.

I never saw any sim-changing. AFAIK the original SIM card is still in
both phones.
