Default 3GS 2 big problems

I have a 3GS with a screen that is all white.

lots of googling has told me that this is a broken LCD, replace it
etc, etc, etc.

*but*

If I do a hard reset the display, the display, the touch function and
the home button will work fine until the screen locks, when I unlock
it again the screen will be white until another hard reset.

I have turned off auto lock and it works fine for hours unless I lock
it so I can't see how it is a hardware problem, but OTOH the problem
did start when I dropped the phone - any ideas?

the other major problem I have had is no signal since I have updated
to IOS 5, no amount of restoring, resetting, switching off of 3G seems
to make any difference.

any ideas?

You can do a "restore" from itunes which may solve the problem. I can't
remember if there is an option to restore from backup (all your apps,
settings etc) or a restore to factory defaults. If there is such an
option, then try both in that order.

I have to agree, if you put lock screen on never you say it works
perfectly? if that is the case a restore / reflash / upgrade even a
jailbreak should sort you out. I have personally fouind it very hard
to actually kill an iphone. You may thing its dead, but you'd be
surprised what can be done , even down to using dfu mode

good luck

i like many others have just upgraded to 5.0.1 on a 3gs and a 4
needless to say jailbroken as well

I hve tried a factory restory and a restore from backup, both them
have failed to fix either problem.

I may as a last resort jailbreak it now there is a untethered
jailbreak, but my power button is dodgy as well which making getting
into DFU mode very very difficult.

The one thing which may fix the no signal problem is installing the
ipad baseband but i am loathed to use this due to the stopping the GPS
from working and I do use the GPS.

I very much doubt that a jailbreak will fix the underlying problem. You
*might* be ale to find an illegal app that changes the way the unit
locks down and this may bypass the problem. But that is just a "may".

If your unit is still under warrantee, then you are better off bringing
it to an Apple Place of Worship to get fixed/replaced. And if
jailbroken, it gives then a chance to say "sorry, you broke it, it is
not covered".

If I were you, I would bring the unit to the apple store and get a
genius to look at it. It may be a known problem and they may have a fix
for it. Bring it to them under a "factory default" state.
