Default Wireless Sync

iTunes 10.5.142 and iOS5.
How do I initiate a wireless sync to my iPad2.
If I don't "wire" my iPad to the PC, it's greyed out
Am I missing something ?

if I'm not mistaken, backing up to the cloud just happens as long as your
iPad is plugged in to the charger and wifi is accessible. The whole point
is supposed to be that you dont have to back up to the PC anymore.

Maybe he doesn't need to, but Apple says we can now sync
to iTunes without the cable via WiFi. He seems to be asking
how to do it.

I was puzzled, too. I couldn't even see the grayed out thing he was
talking about, so I clicked the help menu, typed in wireless, and the
third item was
Sync your device over a WiFi net...

You have to sync by wire, then enable WiFi syncing in iTunes (the help
page tells how) while it is still plugged in. After that you can unplug
and sync wireless.

I posted most of the answer, but it seems to have gone into the Cloud
instead.

You have to enable it first:
Plug in and do a sync.
When it is done, on the select the device icon in iTunes and go to the
summary tab. scroll down and check the box to enable it. Click "Apply"
or iTunes will clear the checkbox when you unplug.

After that, if the iTunes computer is on* and connected to the same WiFi
net as the pad, a sync will start when you plug in the charger or when
you click "sync now" in the settings.

More details in the Help files if you use "wireless" to search.

Forgot to resolve that *

Somehow, the iTunes Helper on my system broke during one of the
upgrades. So my device won't launch iTunes by plugging in.
I have to launch it manually, then plug in the device.

In order to check whether sync would work with iTunes not launched, I
told iTunes to quit. Even though I had already clicked "apply" it
said iPad settings changed, do you want to apply them?

I said yes, and it said "Can't change settings for ipad because it can't
be found" then exited. The sync now button is grayed out again.

Launched iTunes on the Mac. The iPad reappeared (without cable) and the
sync now button is no longer grey. Tapped it, and the sync started.

The help file said that during a sync, a sync icon would appear in the
iPad's status bar, but it doesn't. However, iTunes shows the same
progress data it always did.

When I set it up, in the wireless settings, the sync was grayed out
for about a day. I don't know what it was waiting for. So I
recommend setting it up in the settings then checking back later.

So, are you guys saying that if I did a wireless sync with iTunes I could
STILL back up to the cloud, or is still one or the other ?

There's a switch on iTunes which I could use to back-up to either
iCloud or to my computer. I don't know why I would want to back it
up to iCloud. I don't think it has anything to do with having
wireless syncs - wireless and wired seem to change nothing except how
convenient the connection is.

Here's one odd thing that changed for me:

iTunes is running.
The iPad has a sync now button.
I tap that, and the sync starts.
(sometimes iTune shows it happening, sometimes not)
afterward, iTunes still knows the iPad is there, and vice versa.
Quit iTunes, it says "you made changes to iPad settings.
Do you want to save them?"
Click OK and it says "Could not save settings because the
iPad could not be found."

?!

But as far as I can tell, everything synced properly.

Yeah, I got that too. It seems to have been part of the initial
install - which had problems because most all of my sync settings were
gone. But iteratively, I got iCloud and iTunes working so that that
(and other) weirdness is gone. My iTunes seems to now behave the
same whether my iPad is plugged in here, or into its charging stand
upstairs.
