Apple's use of the "i" prefix means "personal" ("my").

That naming convention started with the "iMac", in 1998. In general,
Apple used it to identify products for personal/home/educational use as
opposed to professional use:

iMac vs Power Macintosh (for a while there was a cheaper "eMac" aimed at
educational use, while the "iMac" was a more expensive model for home
use).

iBook vs PowerBook
iTunes for managing personal music collections
iPhoto for managing personal photo collections (vs Aperture)
iMovie for home movies (vs Final Cut Pro)
iDVD for making simple DVDs (vs DVD Studio Pro)

(iSync, iCal, iChat, iBooks are others that come to mind).

iPod is a personal music player.

The personal vs professional aspect is blurred somewhat with the iPhone
and iPad since there the same device covers both personal and
professional use. The iPhone is clearly intended for use by one person,
and some features of the iPad are best suited to having a single user.

I like the last paragraph of that article:

³Dell and Apple: Itıs night and day,² Segall says. ³Itıs a
transactional world Dell lives in. Itıs all about numbers. Everything
they say about Apple making products for themselves is true. Apple ‹
itıs about changing the world. For everyone else, itıs about the
money.²

Thanks for the pointer. So it really meant several things as first
envisioned (including "Internet" and "Individual").

Since then, it seems to me that Apple's usage has mostly leaned towards
the "individual" meaning, or keeping the convention to emphasise the
association between related products (e.g. iPod/iPhone/iPad/iOS/iTunes).

The "Internet" concept was an important point at first (e.g. the six
step pictorial instructions that came with an iMac showing how easy it
was to set up and get it on to the Internet) but was by no means
specific to Apple products following that naming convention.

Thanks David.
It was interesting to read. Apple have been wise to give their products
easy to remember names.
