I discovered not long ago that mail I was deleting on my iPad was piling up
in "Trash" on my iPad, even though it had been deleted from my computer AND
from my ISP mail. This apparently dates to the last "up"grade (NOT iOS5)
I allowed. I have since discovered that, after deleting it from my inbox,
I CAN get rid of it by deleting it AGAIN from "Trash". Does anyone know
why I have to delete everything twice?

Put the iPad into the trash. Then you will no longer need to worry about
the problem.

Don't put it in the trash. Instead, put it in the mail. Send me an email

If by twice you mean from the inbox and the trash, I think it is a
good thing because it sort of acts as a safety valve. If you were to
accidentally delete it from your inbox, you still have a chance to
retrieve it, via the trash folder. That's my take on it.

That's how it works with most mail programs on computers, so why should it
be different with iOS?

For that matter, that's how it works with the Finder in Mac OS X (actually,
from System 7 onward) and with the equivalent in Windows.

With Windows, one only needs to hold the Shft key down whilst deleting to
deletee permanently...
I would imagine that there is a similar method available to you.

Not only that, it's how it works in Gmail. There's no "delete on sight"
or "filter to /dev/null" option. You can delete "all" in the Trash, or
in the Spam folder, but you have to send the stuff to the folder and
open the folder and see what's there. It annoyed me at first, but I
guess it's for the greater good of those who would suddenly want their
deleted mail magically restored.
