I am a novice photographer and would like to know of a program to transfer
photos from my computer to the ipad1.
I have itunes but it is very slow and all I want to do is load new photos
to the ipad.
I downloaded doubletwist but it seems to be for android now.

A simple method is on PC copy photos to a camera memory card and use camera
kit to import into iPad. Only problem is that will not allow placing photos
into folders so after a sync you will have to find where photos are stored
on your PC and then organize there if you want photos in folders and then
on the next sync iPad will have the folders.

There's a device(not app) for that. I have one. Works fine.

Apple's iPad Connection Kit. It has two. One reads cards from cameras
with the little square ones like the one my daughter has. The other accepts
the cord from other cameras like mine with memory sticks. (My camera is
older)
