(Apologies of this is a duplicate; my first effort seems to have
disappeared into the aether.)

My wife's iPad 1 with 32GB of RAM is running IOS 5.0.1.

She uses Safari primarily to read news sites--NYT, Balt Sun, Wash Post,
MSNBC, et al. Safari crashes perhaps every half hour or so. She has
been unable to relate the crashes to any particular kind of page
content. She reset Safari and the problem went away for a couple of
days before returning.

Ideas welcome. TIA!

The iPad itself is probably the best witness in these circumstances.

I can't help you with the root cause, but make sure you try a full
reboot and see if the symptoms go away. Hold the power and home
buttons until the white apple symbol appears (ignore the slide to turn
off when it comes up and keep holding the buttons until the apple
symbol appears). No data is lost doing that. I have had almost no
problems with my iPad, but the few that did occur went away after a
reboot. The same procedure works on iPhones.

This is probably not helpful, but I read a lot of news, too--for which I
have apps. I'm NOT using iOS5, however.

I've seen the same thing (iPad1, 32 Gig, iOS 5.0.1) in Safari, though it
seems worse on the Washington Post site (though I do go there more than
any other paper). FWIW, there was a time about 3 weeks ago when Neither
Safari or Mercury could open a WaPo page without crashing. This has
gotten better since.

Happens to my iPad all the time.

Judging by the hundreds of "LowMemory..." logs that show up in the
CrashReporter directory, there's just not enough RAM (or whatever the
iPad uses) to run the browser reliably.

Other apps crash from time to time as well, but not so often as Safari.

this is where quitting all the apps in the taskbar helps a *lot*, even
though memory management is supposed to happen automatically. the
reality is, it doesn't work as well as it should.

try another browser. safari is very light on features.

Safari rarely crashes on my iPad 1

Facebook crashes often, and occasionally, it will also terminate another
app that is supposedly suspended.

You forgot the "IMO." Safari on my IOS thingies has every feature I
require in a web browser in that it displays web pages properly.
