This post is mainly talk, but I would appreciate some feedback.

I needed a camera which plugs into my Mac and ended up buying the
smallest iPhone 4 for $100. The hard part was increasing my Verizon
bill by $20 per month (That assumes I won't be using a lot of data
which seems like a safe bet). Texting is disabled, but I believe I
should be able to text my daughter or anybody else with an iPhone or
an iPad - but not her daughters who text all of the time on a regular
phone.

Since my iPad I is the biggest available, I knew I would have to cut
down in what I synchronized. The list of apps was smaller too, as
some won't run on an iPhone. But some won't run on my iPad I either.

I synchronized some readers, and looked at them in Apps/File
Sharing/Apps/ and saw that none of the books I dragged in were there.
Is that the way it's supposed to work?

It was hard to put in my iCloud ID - that keyboard is *tiny*.

I like the fact that I can spend $20 on vacation and make my iPhone a
Wi-Fi base for my iPad for a month.

When I have two grandchildren in the back seat, the fighting won't be
as bad if I hand the phone to the one without the pad. I'll have to
make sure they don't use any phone features though.

I wanted to add a 2nd .mac e-mail address, but the Apple Store guy
said they stopped adding new e-mail addresses, but my wife can keep
hers forever.

I'm thinking I will not use e-mail much. Right now, I don't use my
iPad for e-mail except while on vacation - when my Mac is off. So
POP works. Maybe I'll have a reason to try to get my brother to
upgrade my account to iMap if I find a reason to get e-mail at
different places.

My iPad is easier to use, but it doesn't have a camera, won't fit in
my pocket, and doesn't have a phone (and doesn't cost $20/month
extra).

I just set my iPhone to vibrate only. That way I don't have to touch
it in movie theaters. Maybe I need to do the same thing with
notifications.

I don't have any current interest in any of the social media apps or
features.

I got out my Apple bluetooth keyboard, tested it on my iPad, and told
my iPhone to look for it. It's still looking.

Was it still connected to your iPad at the time?

My bluetooth (non-Apple) keyboard works fine on iPhone. I haven't tried
the Apple one that way.

I've tried it both ways. Looking at the Web, I see mention of an
8-digit passkey, but I don't remember needing one for my iPad. Another
web page tells me to go to "devices" on my iPhone, this always has
"searching". Maybe I'll take my keyboard to the Apple Store Friday.

I've also tried it on the same floor as my iPad and on a different
floor.

In iTunes, my iPhone has the option "Sync with this phone over Wi-Fi"
checked, and my phone sees my local network, but when I unplug my
iPhone, it disappears from iTunes. My iPad does not disappear.

I did when I first got it. Worked fine, I just couldn't find a use for
it that wasn't more awkward than using the on-screen keyboard

A friend of mine has a iPhone "case" with a slide-out keyboard, seems
reasonably useful if you type a ton and have large fingers (which he
does)

I have a stand the iPad or iPhone can sit in. Used that at home with
the keyboard, touch kbd when out.
