Default iPad won't charge if below 60%

My iPad 1 has started to show the following symptom.

If I have drained the battery below about 60% charge, it doesn't want to
accept a charge when I plug it into its wall charger. In fact, it even
continues to drain.

I tried plugging it into the adapter in my car and it did charge up to
100%. I thought the problem might be a bad wall charger, so I tried
another one with exactly the same results.

Does this sound like the battery is going bad OR that something has
happened to the charging circuit?

I plan on taking it down to the Apple store where I bought it later
today. It is still under the 1 year warranty by a couple of months.

The iPad has no knowledge of where the electricity comes from. If it
charges from the car charger, but not the wall charger, the problem is with
the wall charger.

As I said, I had the same charging problem with two different wall
adapters, so that kind of eliminates the adapter as being the source of
the problem.

Same cables. Also, had the same charging problem using two different
wall adapters. That leads me to believe that the problem is in the iPad
and not the external charger.

Are you using the 10W adaptors designed for the iPad, or are you using the
5W adaptors designed for the iPhone?

One adapter is the one that originally came with the iPad. The other is
one I purchased just a few days ago. It has 2 charging ports one it,
one of which is rated at 2.1 amps. It is the 2.1 amp port that I used
to try to charge the iPad.

There is one other variable in the system that I just realized that I
had not taken into account and that I need to experiment with. I just
plugged my iPad back into its original adapter and it seems to be
charging up now. But there is a difference that I not considered
before: I HAD been using an extension USB cable between the charger and
the iPad cable because I had no convenient outlet near my bedside and I
wanted to use the iPad at bed time. The extension cable is NOT
connected at the moment and the iPad IS charging. Maybe the extension
cable is not so good an idea, although it has charged the iPad just fine
previously.

usb extension cables are not part of the usb spec. that could very
likely be the problem.

First prove that the wall plug is working.

Plug in a light in the SAME socket used for the charger.

I think that I can confirm that the USB extension cable I was using was
the source of my problem. My iPad has charged up nicely now without it.
I am surprised at how much of an effect it had!
