They perhaps should get more powerful access points, since the
i-devices are the poorest things on the market at picking up usable
wifi signals

Haven't ever had a problem with any of mine.

Totally consistently, I can stick my Thinkpad x60s laptop on a hotel
room table, stick the Ipad2 or Iphone4 next to it, and if the wifi is
fairly weak, the i-devices get nowt.

I've stayed at a place that advertised " free wi-fi" in the rooms that
didn't reach two rooms beyond the office; I had to go sit in the office to
check my e-mail 8-)

That is really really common.

A lot of hotels limit 'free wifi' to the lobby, where they can sell
you drinks/food.

It's one of many scams...

I suggest getting an Apple AirPort Express. Very helpful to have
especially where Wi-Fi is not offered but Ethernet is.

Which would not pay off. People don't go back to hotels with shoddy
service.

What peeves me is that if I stay in a Holiday Inn Express ($70 - $110 /
night typical), Wi-Fi is included and is usually good service.

If I stay in a Sheraton or Hilton ($120 - $250 night typical), Wi-Fi is
extra, usually $11.99 per day (even though you're there, my typical
case, from about 22:00 to 07:30).

Some airport concourses have free Wi-Fi and occasionally you'll find a
free hotspot.

I once paid for a roaming Wi-Fi service, about $50 / month, but
availability was patchy.

I've recently used my iPhone as a tether via 3G. That's fine here in
Canada, but roaming in the US would be very expensive. Europe: Worse.

they get new customers instead of repeat customers.

the latter tends to get business customers who put the extra charges on
their expense account.

airports that are major hubs tend to have paid wifi (atl, dfw, ord).
some airports have free wifi but force you to sit through ads before
activating it (and then it times out and you have to redo it), or they
inject ads into any webpage you visit. smaller airports and o/d
airports tend to have free wifi.
