Default iOS 5.0.1: Getting notifications with notifications off

Original iPad with iOS 5.0.1 recently installed.

I played with notifications a bit yesterday, decided I didn't really
need them and turned them all off.

The iPad was plugged in to the charger in the lock screen and this
morning at 5:05 AM CST I received a notification from the "CNBC RT" app.
About an hour later I got another one.

I checked and the notification list still shows "Empty."

Is this a fault of the app or the OS?

[I find it strange and annoying that there's no way to turn all
notifications on or off without having to change the setting on each
individual app]

Do you have Push set to On, in Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars >
Fetch New Data?

No. But anyway, this isn't mail.

How sure are you that you turned off all of the applicable options? Each
application has one or more settings including "Notification Center",
"Alert Style" "Badge App Icon", "Sounds" and "View in Lock Screen" (plus
specialty items belonging to various Apple services)

What you've described might happen if an application's "Notification
Center" switch is off, but the "Alert Style" is still enabled. In this
configuration, the alert will still show up but once it's gone, it won't
be in the Notification Center, exactly as you described.

I suspected that might be the case, which is a pretty silly way to
implement such an interface. That, along with the fact that there's no
way to simply turn all notifications off, as you can do with location
services.

I went through all the apps in the list, turned everything off and
was not awakened the next morning.
