Default How to ensure Ipad does not access the internet?

I have just discovered that my Ipad has downloaded IOS 5.0.1.

It seems to have done it while it was "switched off" i.e. with the
magnetic cover in place and with the screen OFF.

With GPRS/3G, one normally would have that turned OFF, but not with
WIFI.

I have already disabled Icloud, but I was suprised to find that WIFI
carries on downloading stuff when the device is not used.

Should I switch off WIFI too?

How long has 5.0.1 been available. I ask because my iPad2's WiFi is
permanently on and it did not update automatically. I did it this morning
through iTunes.

Less than a week.

Contrary to some people's misconceptions, an iOS device can't download an
update to the OS unless it is explicitly told to do so.

Mine just did, and then asked if I want to install it.

If you answer "yes", it will then download it and install it. If you
answer "No", it will not download it. So, no, it did not download it.

FWIW, my iPhone 4 did. It didn't *install* the update until
I told it to, but the download took place with me ever having
told it to do so.

On my iPad2, however, it had "download and install" and I
saw no way to tell it to just download but not install.

I looked to see if I'd missed some setting between the two
to enable background downloads (but not, of course, installs),
but found nothing.

That's very doubtful. What makes you think so?

Of course. What would be the point of that?

Has it occurred to you that it's entirely possible the button is
labelled differently on the iPhone simply due to space reasons, and that
nothing was downloaded?

Because I remember reading on the screen words to
the effect of "update already downloaded click here
to install". It seemed quite clear, though it
is possible I misread.

I might not be in a position to do the install yet but,
and especially if it's a big download, would like to
have it ready to go for when I am ready. I do this
all the time with updates on my desktop machines, don't
you?

Of course, that's possible. But there's plenty of space
and the message seemed pretty clear.

Does something make you think I'm making this up?

No. But I do wonder if you mistook the situation.
