Dear friends:

Please, recommend me a good Blu Ray ripper that allows me to see the movies
on my iPad.

I am planning to buy a Blu Ray reader to be connected to my HD TV set, not
to my computer. I don't like to see movies on traditional personal
computers.

But I don't want to be forced to buy my movies twice, one in Blu Ray format
to watch them on the TV set, and another in DVD format to rip them (using
Handbrake) in order to see them on my iPad.

So maybe the solution will be to buy an additional external USB connected
Blu Ray reader, in order to be able to rip the Blu Ray movie in a format
apt to be seen on the iPad. Which software will you recommend me to do
that? Is Handbrake able to do it?

Which are, approximately, the prices in the USA now for an external device,
able to be connected through USB 2.0 to a Mac, capable to read Blu Ray
disks, and to read and burn CDs and DVDs? Do you have an specific
recommendation for such a device?

Many BluRay disks come with a digital version for loading onto your
computer.

Do you mean that many BluRay disks come with a file in it, that it can be
downloaded to a computer, and then converted to an iPad format using
Handbrake? Did I understand you well?

Aren't most BluRay media laden with DRM to prevent such a thing?

Some of them come with a "digital copy" that can play on iPads without
conversion. Careful, some of these have to "unlocked" and have a time
limit. Which is okay. I got a full 3-disc set of LOTR for $5 at our
local discount store because the digital copies had all expired. I just
wanted the Blu-rays myslef.

You don't have to convert anything. The BluRay discs that have the
'digital copy' feature will just load right into your iTunes library.

One caveat, some movies now have 'ultraviolet' digital copy and not what
was and is used by most. That won't stuff it into iTunes and requires
using the god-awful crap they do support.

They come with a file that can be played on the computer or synced with an
iPad/iPhone/Apple TV to be played, without any conversion.

Some have a process that lets you download a file instead of copying it
from the disc. The end result is the same though; you get a playable file
that needs no conversion.
