To come back to your initial question: Give Handbrake a try -
http://handbrake.fr.

Any DVD or Bluray-like source which is NOT copy-protected can me
migrated into iPad readable format. (removal of copy protection is not
supported)

It would take 25 to 50 gigs of space on the iPad to put a blu-ray movie on
the iPad and hen you won't get high quality playback. The data rate is
likely to be too fast for the iPad's processor.

it would be transcoded for the ipad display and be significantly
smaller.

That's why you use the best format *for the iPad* when you rip it.

I use makemkv to rip the BluRay, I don't think handbrake will rip a BluRay
but I could be wrong. I then use handbrake to transcode to iPad format. Use
the iPad preset and change the picture size to 1270 wide. I then use
Identify2 to set the meta info with all the pertinent info and cover art.
Bring the file into iTunes and that's it.

HTH,

Mike
