Yesterday i got it and braught IOS 5 on the iPad of my wife.
earlier i transferred many pictures with iTunes on the iPad. After the
update we missed these pictures. Only those stored from the mails are
present now. Has anyone an advice to avoid this in the future?

This could be caused by having manual sync in iTunes.

How about content? My daughter installed iOS5 on her new iPad2 before I
had a chance to warn her and she lost some extensive content in a couple
apps she hadn't backed up separately, as was apparently required. There was
no warning anywhere that this was needed. It was apparently like Pages,
where I have to "export" documents one by one if I want them backed up, but
I only learned this myself because I was creating documents on my laptop
and "exporting" them to the iPad at first.

That shouldn't be a problem as long as that content is in the
backup. When I upgraded to iOS5 all the content stayed the same.
Pages kept its documents and games kept their save states.
The clue is that itunes asks you if you want to restore the
device from backup or use it as a new device. If you restore,
you will keep the new iOS version, but all your apps and stuff
get restored from backup.

But iTunes didn't ask.
