Default Converting videos, losing audio

When I download an old movie that I'd like to watch on my iPad, I need
to convert the movie to iPad format (m4v). I frequently do the
conversion (I am partial to Handbrake Batch) and when I try to play the
movie on my iPad the sound is missing.

Today's case was in converting a movie.avi file to movie.m4v. The file
I put into iTunes had audio, but when I tried to play it on my iPad the
audio was gone. Some files have had successful audio on my iPad, but
not this one.

Any suggestions? I'm willing to try to learn anything to begin getting
this right. I'm wasting too much of my own time.

Thanks in advance.

does the movie play properly on the mac before you convert? are you
picking the apple universal profile in handbrake?

You can try MPEG Streamclip.app and get the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback
Component:

<http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3381>

This component can unlock the door to getting sound.

How does one get the m4v from Mac to iPad. My wife has an iPad that I
never use, so I'm not quite sure how to move it there.

You add it to iTunes and sync, of course.

Send an email to her with an attachment perhaps? If you do this, take
the opportunity to get a little poetic and romantic, it always goes
down well with one's spouse, either because she becomes pleasantly
sentimental, weak at the knees, or entertained to find herself rolling
about the carpet in paroxysms of helpless laughter.

There is a discussion about if you have trouble with the file once it
is on the iPad, at

<https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2456525?start=0&tstart=0>

Perhaps

might be useful to you?

That doesn't run under Lion, though, does it?

That doesn't sound like the direct answer I'd hoped for. I attempted
this drill last week and got nowhere. How 'bout you?
