Default Contacts Lost - iOS 5

I did a pretty easy (although lengthy) upgrad on my iPad to iOS5. However,
in the end I discovered none of my contacts were on my iPad. A little
browsing around and I found that if I had turned on iCloud and "merged" my
contacts to the cloud, they would not appear on the iPad.....the
"instruction" said go to settings and turn off contacts in the iCloud. I did
that and my contacts were back. QUESTION: If I can't merge my contacts to
the cloud, how will I be able to keep them synced between my iPad and my
iPhone (which I haven't yet updated....so I know they won't sync with the
cloud until I do)?

This may well be some form of error that occurred at a certain point during
your upgrade process, as like you I had Contacts selected for iCloud
inclusion but with no I'll effects on the iOS 5 install on my iPad or the
update to my MacBook Air's Mac OS X to 10.7.2 from 10.7.1.

The only thing that occurred was a duplicate of my name in the Contacts
application, but not of anyone else's name and details.

All I can say is that sometimes glitches happen on individual occasions. A
proof in point is the trouble I had actually upgrading to iOS 5 from the
previous iOS version. It took me several tries before the installation
would take as a process. Now that was frustrating and initially left me
wondering whether the download had been corrupted.

Have you tried going back into the setting on your device and turning on
Contacts in the iCloud again to see whether through this process you are
successful in gaining a sync?

I found my photos messed up, so I turned off iCloud, rebooted the pad
and now they're fine again.

You can recover your contacts from Time Machine, if you're using it.

For contacts only, launch the Address Book and then Time mMachine.
Navigate to a backup which displays a non-empty contacts page.
Restore that version.

The above procedure will not recover the groups, however.

I recovered my complete Address Book , including groups, by
Open a Finder window to ~/Library/Application Support.
Mount the TM volume.
Navigate to the desired backup date/time.
Navigate to the proper <user>/Library/Application Support.
Drag copy the folder "Address Book" to ~/Library/Application Support.

Actually haven't tried reactive ting the contacts. I called AppleCare and
they told me contacts aren't backed up to the cloud...yet. It's something
they're working on.
