Default charging

I'm sure there's a place to look this up, but I don't know where, so I'm
offering it here.

Is there a difference between the chargers for iPod and iPad, and if so,
what ? I've been recharging my iPod with the iPad charger because that's
the one plugged into the only avaible convenient outlet. The iPod seems
content with the arrangement. Would the iPad recharge as fast with the
iPod's charger plug?

the ipad charger is 2 amps (10 watts) and the ipod charger is 1 amp (5
watts).

no problem doing that.

it will take longer because the ipod charger can't source as much power
as the ipad charger.

Thank you kindly 8-). It's one of those little things I've wondered about
at odd intervals.

How can the Ipad tell how much current to draw, when both chargers
have the same output voltage?

the iPad <->charger interface recognizes specific levels on the USB data
line to set the charging rate.

How does that work?

The USB chargers just output +5V. Are you saying that *all* USB power
packs e.g.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Black-Mains-...4944012&sr=8-1

output specific voltage levels on the two middle pins, to indicate the
maximum current capability?

usb 1 & 2 initially supplies 100ma and a device can request 500ma. usb
3 is 150ma/900 ma. the usb battery charging spec lets a device use
higher power by biasing the data pins.

You are not answering the Q which is how does the I pad know what a
*power supply* can deliver.

I know about the USB slave device declaring its required current; I've
designed a few of them.

But I didn't know a cheap USB +5V power supply can declare its output
capability, when it doesn't have a USB controller chip inside.
