Default beeping and buzzing

I've been futzing with my settings since I got my iPhone. I want it
to ring and vibrate when I get calls. I have a bunch of
notifications on.

But every few minutes I get a quiet beep and short buzz, and I can't
trace down what causes this. I swipe down to see notifications.
Nothing. I check my phone - nothing. I have no idea what it's
buzzing about. What good is a beep or buzz if I can't trace down
what it's for?

So I have two questions:
1. How do I find out what the beep is trying to tell me?
2. Once I know, how do I turn off that beep/buzz (let me see the
notification later).

This is Usenet. You don't have to beep it out.
