Default Battery level down then up

I was out listening to music on my 2nd generation iPod touch and the
music stopped and the screen showed a low level almost dead battery,
when I got home to plug it in for a charge that battery indicator showed
an almost full charge, and it now has a full charge after plugging it in.

What just happened and what does it mean?

Chemistry. That, and a bit of quirkiness of charge indicators.

Discharge a battery for a bit, enough to see a reduced voltage output, break the
circuit and let the battery sit for a while, and chemical reactions act to
partly bring up the voltage again.

When the charge indicators show half charge, it isn't showing half of peak
voltage either, depending on the type of battery, it might just be volt or three
down from full charge. So a slight increase in voltage might show as a large
indicated charge level.
